Biomechanical Analysis of the Influence of Contralateral Leg Balance on the Effectiveness of the Bandal Chagi Kick in Taekwondo

Valverde E.; Loza E.; Zuñiga L.; Valdivia E. · IFMBE Proceedings (2025) · DOI: 10.1007/978-3-032-06401-1_13

Resumen

This study aims to analyze the biomechanical aspects of the Bandal Chagi kick in Taekwondo, with a focus on the influence of contralateral leg balance on movement effectiveness. Two volunteer male athletes from the Taekwondo team at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) were evaluated. Kinematic data on displacement, velocity, and acceleration were collected using Kinovea software, while balance was assessed using a force platform to determine center of pressure (COP) parameters based on the area of the ellipse formed by the trajectory of medial-lateral and anterior-posterior sway, with the evaluation criterion being the total area. The kick phases (preparation, extension, and recovery) were analyzed in this study. Results revealed consistent kinematic patterns across trials, but an inconsistent relationship between COP area and kick performance metrics such as peak foot velocity and elevation. This suggests a limited role of contralateral leg balance in movement effectiveness under the test conditions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
