Resumen
Bilingual education has been deployed in many countries as a means of improving educational outcomes for minority language speakers. Evidence suggests that additive bilingual programs are an effective at improving learning outcomes for these students, although much of this evidence is quite old and concentrated in a few countries. Many national and sub-national governments have struggled in implementing bilingual education, with resource constraints and political obstacles being frequent barriers. As research and policy move forward, efforts should be made to make programs more inclusive of linguistic diversity. Pedagogical practices like translanguaging and the use of emerging technologies such as game-based learning and virtual reality hold promise to improve educational outcomes.
