Bibliometric Analysis on the Use of Living Organisms as Electrical Conductors in Bioelectrochemical Systems: Approaches, Applications and Current Trend

De La Cruz-Noriega M.; Benites S.M.; Cedrón D.G. · 2025 6th International Conference on Advanced Electrical and Energy Systems, AEES 2025 (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/aees66649.2025.11332232

Resumen

This bibliometric study aimed to analyze scientific production on the use of living organisms as electrical conductors in bioelectrochemical systems (BES). The Scopus database (2015-2024) was examined using VOSviewer to visualize collaboration networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic density. A total of 255 publications were identified, evidencing sustained growth, with a peak in 2022. The most productive countries were China, the United States, Germany, and Japan, with authors such as Gescher, Song, and Li standing out for their impact. The findings reveal an interdisciplinary evolution that integrates microbiology, chemical engineering, materials science, and biotechnology, with applications in bioenergy, water treatment, biosensors, and bioproducts. In addition, approaches such as synthetic biology and microbial consortia are emerging. In conclusion, BES constitute a consolidated and expanding field, with high potential to address energy and environmental challenges through sustainable and innovative solutions.
