Barriers and Facilitators in the Work Systems of Occupational Therapists in Peru Using the Sensory Integration Approach

Escobar-Galindo C.M.; Rodriguez-Rojas R.R.; Villalobos-Tupia J.E.; Lee-Agarie A.S.K.; Gonzáles-Rojas K. · Springer Series in Design and Innovation (2026) · DOI: 10.1007/978-3-032-23073-7_11

Resumen

This qualitative study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators in the work systems of occupational therapists (OTs) delivering sensory integration and neurodevelopmental interventions, using the SEIPS 101 model as a framework. Six certified OTs participated in semi-structured interviews, complemented by field observations. Data were thematically analyzed following Braun and Clarke’s approach with ATLAS.ti v.25. Barriers included high patient load, physical demands, creative workload, equipment shortages, limited organizational understanding, excessive documentation, and time constraints. Facilitators encompassed prior experience, interdisciplinary teamwork, parental involvement, creative material adaptation, standardized protocols, and flexible scheduling. Interactions across system components were evident: parental engagement reduced therapist workload, adequate tools optimized processes, and supportive organizations mitigated environmental challenges. Findings underscore the need for systemic redesign to improve workflow, equipment access, and interdisciplinary coordination, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and supporting OT well-being in pediatric rehabilitation settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
