Automated System for the Sanding and Oiling Process of Cachimbo and Huayruro Wood in Dining Table Manufacturing

Bohorquez R.; Lescano L.; Sampen L. · Proceedings of the 2025 IEEE 32nd International Conference on Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computing, INTERCON 2025 (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/intercon67304.2025.11244710

Resumen

In the woodworking sector, finishing operations are critical for ensuring product quality and durability, especially for high-value furniture such as dining tables. However, sanding and oiling of tropical woods like cachimbo and huayruro are still mainly performed manually, causing inconsistent surface finishes and significant health risks due to prolonged exposure to wood dust, a known human carcinogen. Although automation has advanced in cutting and assembly, few integrated finishing solutions are accessible to small and medium woodworking enterprises. Recent research on robotic sanding and UV-curable coatings has demonstrated improvements in finish uniformity and drying efficiency. This paper presents the design and validation of an affordable automated finishing system that integrates multi-stage sanding, precise oil application, UV-accelerated curing, and dust extraction. The system is controlled using a programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface (HMI) for safe, consistent operation. Laboratory tests with cachimbo and huayruro samples showed a cycle time reduction exceeding 60% compared to traditional methods, with improved finish quality and enhanced occupational safety. The results demonstrate practical feasibility for modernizing manual finishing processes in small tropical woodworking workshops.
