Assessment of Skill Development in Business Engineering Students: An Explanatory Case Study

Lizby Suarez-Torres B.; Elizabeth Boñon-Silva C.; Miguel Deza-Castillo J.; Italo Villena Zapata L. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2026) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2026.1.1.887

Resumen

The study focused on explaining the longitudinal trends in the results obtained from assessments of competencies acquired by Business Engineering students at the Universidad Privada del Norte (Peru) during the 2019-2023 period. The study was conducted within the parameters of the national quality assurance system SINEACE (National System for the Evaluation, Accreditation, and Certification of Educational Quality) and aligned with national accreditation standards promoted by ICACIT (an international accrediting agency specializing in undergraduate and graduate programs in STEM and architecture), where the research documents how the systematic, evidence-based competency assessment process was progressively implemented and refined; furthermore, it details the criteria used in the measurement, the educational objectives, student outcomes, and the calculation and analysis of these in the so-called capstone courses. Nine competencies were considered for the 2019-2022 period and 11 for the 2023 period, with results showing greater consistency beginning in the 2023-1 period. The Research and Ethics competencies maintained 100% compliance since 2022, in contrast to the Engineering Knowledge competency, which showed a -4% variation prior to standardization. Environment and Sustainability and Engineering and Society showed variations of -3% and -1%, respectively, before being replaced by the competency The Professional and the World, which achieved 96% in its first measurement period. The findings demonstrate that systematic, results-oriented assessment not only meets accreditation requirements but also significantly strengthens graduates' employability profiles and institutional quality indicators.
