Assessment of Light Absorption and Scattering in the Index Finger using a Multiple Photodetector Multi-spectral PPG Signals Acquisition Platform

Linares P.; Bautista D.; Prado S. · Proceedings of the 3rd IEEE Eurasia Conference on IOT, Communication and Engineering 2021, ECICE 2021 (2021) · DOI: 10.1109/ecice52819.2021.9645708

Resumen

In the present work, the development of a multispectral photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal acquisition platform is detailed. The main feature is having an array of 5 photodiodes instead of just one, as is common in other similar devices. This setup allowed us to develop a device with the capability of assessing the light scattering and absorption in a human fingertip related to the hemoglobin concentration. First, the relationship between light scattering and absorption phenomena with hemoglobin concentration is explained. Second, the block diagram of the whole system is described and the function of each block is defined as well as its main components. Third, the working principle of each block is explained in detail, especially the analog signal conditioning block, the optoelectronic sensor, and the digital signal processing block. Fourth, the implementation of the platform is described. Finally, the obtained signals and their main characteristics under different conditions (e.g., skin tone, light wavelength) are shown.
