Assessing the performance of compression techniques in IoT-based biomedical signal transmission

Chora Aguilar D.; Chura Guerra F.; Talavera J.S. · Przeglad Elektrotechniczny (2025) · DOI: 10.15199/48.2025.10.39

Resumen

The efficient transmission of biomedical signals in IoT-based systems enables remote healthcare, particularly in underserved regions. This work compares DWT, RLE, and Huffman coding based on their performance in terms of bandwidth, energy, and signal fidelity in IoT networks. Tests performed using ECG and PPG signals show that DWT achieves the highest compression, but with high computational complexity. Huffman coding preserves integrity (PRD<1%) with moderate compression, while RLE is most energy-efficient but offers lighter compression. The study highlights trade-offs, emphasizing context-suitable method selection for scalable IoT healthcare solutions.
