Art makers and the making of art: Latin America, ca. 1780-1880

Majluf N. · The Routledge Hispanic Studies Companion to Nineteenth-Century Latin America (2024) · DOI: 10.4324/9780367808839-34

Resumen

This chapter attempts to offer a new account of the emergence of the modern system of the arts in Latin America, one that questions the role traditionally assigned to art academies and to stylistic categories. By analyzing the representations of art and artists that emerged throughout the region at the turn of the nineteenth century, it explores the tensions and conflicts that the new system generated, as it clashed with well-established artistic practices. Artist portraits, allegories, and images of the arts thus reveal the broad outlines of how the new aesthetic marked its boundaries along cultural, social, and racial distinctions that effectively excluded other conceptions and radically transformed the status of the artist.
