Application of the MQTT Protocol for Real-Time Monitoring of an Irrigation System

Villanueva J.A.; Rojas X.H.; Rojo C.C. · 2023 IEEE World AI IoT Congress, AIIoT 2023 (2023) · DOI: 10.1109/aiiot58121.2023.10174494

Resumen

Climate change has caused a series of droughts throughout the world that affected populations that require sufficient water resources to make their crops prosper and produce food for the community. The incorporation of automatic irrigation systems has been one of the ways to contribute to the development of agriculture in the face of droughts that impact different regions of the world. These systems allow responsible consumption of water and consequently an effective and efficient use since it allows proper management of the reserves of water that are available to distribute these reserves in cases of cuts in the water service. In this research project, the implementation of the MQTT protocol is proposed to send the data corresponding to the irrigation system to the cloud and users can view the data from a device that they consider convenient. The system presented is composed of 5 stages that allow readings of the environment where the irrigation system is positioned and that with the help of a Raspberry Pi allows the data acquired to be transmitted to a database in the cloud. Additionally, this microcomputer makes use of the MQTT protocol to send this data to a PWA that allows real-time monitoring. The displayed PWA allows observing the data from the different humidity sensors located in the field and generates a linear graph that allows following the water consumption over a period that facilitates knowing the efficiency of the system.
