Application of nanotechnology to improve the durability of smart textiles in the health sector: A systematic review of the literature

Praxedes Jeanpierre M.-R.; Espinoza Juan Manuel V. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2025.1.1.766

Resumen

This systematic literature review analyzes the application of nanotechnology to improve the durability of smart textiles in the healthcare sector. A quantitative and descriptive methodology was used based on the PIOC and PRISMA approaches, analyzing 72 scientific articles (2020-2024) extracted from Scopus. The main challenges in the durability of these textiles, the nanotechnological techniques used, the performance indicators and their applications in the medical field were identified. The results demonstrate that the integration of nanomaterials, such as silver nanoparticles, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, improves resistance to abrasion, UV radiation and chemical agents, in addition to conferring antimicrobial and self-cleaning properties essential for healthcare environments. Additionally, advanced incorporation techniques were explored, such as electrospinning and plasma coating, which optimize the functionality and useful life of textiles. This review provides a solid scientific basis for future research and the development of more durable smart textiles, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and nanotechnology innovation in the healthcare sector.
