Resumen
The present work evaluated the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of the total alkaloids of the bulbs of Pyrolirion flammeum (Ruiz & Pav.) Herb. The alkaloids were extracted by acid-base extraction. The chemical composition was determined by GC-MS. The antiplasmodial activity was carried out in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum FCR3 strain resistant to chloroquine. Six alkaloids were identified in P. flammeum bulbs; and Lycorine was the major. Total alkaloids at concentrations of 1.0; 2.5; 5.0; 10.0; 25.0 and 50.0 μg/mL presented inhibition percentages of 21.5±0.3% to 80.1±0.5% against P. falciparum with (p< 0.05) and IC50 6.78±0.3 μg/mL. In conclusion, the total alkaloids of Pyrolirion flammeum (Ruiz & Pav.) Herb presented in vitro antiplasmodial activity against Plasmodium falciparum, constituting the first report of this species.
