Resumen

The purpose of this research was to compare the in vitro antibacterial effect of ethanolic extract of Curcuma Longa L. and Erythroxylum coca var. Coca in concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, and 12.5% against Streptococcus mutans. Materials and Methods: Experimental, comparative, and longitudinal study. The ethanolic extract was obtained by the maceration method with an alcoholic solution, the McFarland method was used for the dilution of the bacterial load to 0.5% turbidity, and the Kirby Bauer method to see the sensitivity of the inhibition halo. Data analysis was performed with a statistical t-test, ANOVA analysis of variance test was used to determine significance, and Tukey's comparison tests were made for comparison. Results: The best antibacterial effect is recorded by the extract of Curcuma longa L. at 100% at 48 h with 16.05 mm of inhibition halo with an effectiveness of 93.04%, the lowest average is by the extract of Erythroxylum coca var. Coca (coca) at a concentration of 12.5% in 24 h with 10.73 mm of inhibition halo with an effectiveness of 62.20%. Conclusions: Both extracts have an inhibitory effect against Streptococcus mutans. Curcuma extract (Curcuma longa L.) has a greater antibacterial effect than coca leaf extract (Erythroxylum coca var. Coca) against Streptococcus mutans at 24 and 48 h. In addition, the antibacterial effect of the active ingredients of both extracts increases after 48 h.
