Resumen

Introduction: Urinary tract infections, mainly caused by Escherichia coli, have shown increasing resistance to traditional antibacterial treatments. Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of hydroalcoholic extracts of Vaccinium Floribundum and Baccharis Linearifolia against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, in search of natural therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of urinary tract infections. Methods: An experimental study was conducted in which Hydroalcoholic extracts were obtained from the leaves and fruits of Vaccinium Floribundum and the leaves of Bacharis Linearifolia. Antibacterial activity was evaluated using the agar diffusion method, with different concentrations of extracts. Inhibition halos were measured to determine the antibacterial effect, and the data were analyzed statistically. Results: The Hydroalcoholic extracts of both plants showed antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, with inhibition diameters ranging from 6.0 mm to 10.9 mm. Intermediate concentrations of the extracts (2.5%) showed the largest inhibition halos, suggesting a possible synergistic effect between the plant compounds. However, no statistically significant differences were found in the analyses performed (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The hydroalcoholic extracts of Vaccinium floribundum and Bacharis linearifolia were shown to have an inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli, especially when intermediate concentrations were used. These results suggest that both plants may represent a potential source of new natural antibacterial agents. Further research is recommended to optimize the extraction process and evaluate its possible therapeutic application.
