Resumen

The level of physical activity is one of the determining factors for a greater predisposition to develop metabolic changes which affect the health of the individual. The objective of this study was to compare anthropometric and physiological indicators related to metabolic risk in obese adolescents with and without exposure to regular physical activity programs. 34 Chilean adolescents (16 men and 18 women) between 11-15 years of age were studied. Weight, height and waist circumference were evaluated. The Mass Index was calculated and the percentage of fat (% G) was determined by means of OMRON BF 300 electrical bio-impedance, in addition to diastolic blood pressure (PAD) and systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate in rest (FCR). Three working groups were organized: the obese group without physical activity (GOSAF), the obese group with physical activity (GOCAF) and the normal weight group (GNP). The GOSAF and GOCAF groups had higher body fat values than the GNP (p <0.001). GOCAF presented higher CC and% G than GOSAF (p <0.001). In relation to blood pressure, GOCAF had significantly lower values of PAD, PAS and FCR in relation to GOSAF (p <0.001). Physical activity in obese adolescents contributes to the decrease of physiological indicators, such as blood pressure and FCR in relation to their counterparts with no regular physical activity. Results suggest the need to implement physical activity programs for school groups with obesity in order to improve blood pressure and FCR.
