Animal welfare in dogs in the high Andean city of Andahuaylas, Peru: associated factors

Sais R.V.; Pomé A.A.V. · Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Peru (2025) · DOI: 10.15381/rivep.v36i1.27754

Resumen

The aim of the study was to estimate the level of animal welfare of dogs in the city of Andahuaylas and the associated factors. The study was cross-sectional, observational and analytical. The sample size was estimated through simple random sampling. Animal welfare was estimated from the score obtained with an observation guide based on the Methodology for Estimating Animal Welfare in Dogs and Cats as Main Companion Animals, in which animal welfare is established from the animal components (behavioural disorders and basic needs of the dog) and human (human-animal relationship). The information was analysed using Chi square, with 95% confidence intervals and a p<0.05. The behavioural disorders identified in dogs (aggression, fear and separation anxiety) were associated with their age (p<0.01). Dog health (veterinary care, vaccinations or deworming, signs of illness and access to waste disposal area) was associated with their breed (p<0.01). The human-animal bond (dog selection guidelines, socialization, training, basic care and own shelter) was associated with the area of residence of the owner (p<0.01). The animal welfare of most dogs was of a medium level, as was territorial animal welfare. © Los autores.
