Analysis of the use of green energies in the shipyard industry

Cornejo Ruiz Italo C.; Mejia Aymeé V.; Ayala German C.R. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2025.1.1.2119

Resumen

The maritime industry, in particular shipbuilding and ship repair, faces significant environmental challenges due to high energy consumption and significant carbon footprint. This study presents a systematic literature review (SLR) based on the Scopus database, aiming to identify and analyze sustainable practices applied in shipyards to mitigate their environmental impact. Using the PICOC and PRISMA methodological frameworks, 20 relevant studies published between 2018 and 2024 were examined. The results show that the adoption of renewable energies, process optimization, waste management, and energy efficiency are key strategies to reduce the carbon footprint and promote operational sustainability. Additionally, the effectiveness of various practices was evaluated through data collection methods such as surveys, audits, and performance analyses. It is concluded that the implementation of sustainable practices not only contributes to climate change mitigation but also generates economic benefits and enhances corporate reputation within the shipbuilding sector.
