Analysis of the Low Waste Recycling Rate in a District of Lima, Peru through Supply Chain Management and Integrated Waste Management

Peña-Buleje D.; Espinoza-Ramos A.; Jauregui I.A.M.; Alvarez J.C.; Yildiz O. · ETCM 2025 - 9th Ecuador Technical Chapters Meeting (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/etcm67548.2025.11304415

Resumen

Poor urban solid waste management is one of the main environmental challenges in Latin America. The district of Los Olivos, located in Lima, Peru, faces a worrying situation: a low recycling rate of 1.79%, even though more than 70% of the waste is potentially recoverable. This represents a growing threat to the environment, public health, and economic sustainability. Analyzing the causes, we identified a lack of awareness campaigns, a lack of infrastructure such as recycling containers or stations, irregular collection, and below-average salaries for recyclers. The analysis was carried out through a methodological approach based on a literature review, collection of official data from institutions, and comparison with success stories from other countries. Therefore, based on the principles of Circular Economy and Sustainability, an innovative proposal is proposed that integrates Supply Chain Management and Integrated Waste Management. This approach seeks to optimize waste collection and processing through adequate logistics and raise environmental awareness among citizens. The goals are to increase recycling rates and reduce environmental impact, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient waste management system.
