Analysis of the design of bicycle lanes using simulation of vehicular traffic on a main avenue in Metropolitan Lima

Resumen

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many bicycle lanes have been created in the city of Lima, as an efficient and ecofriendly transportation system that, among its main objectives, is to encourage the use of bicycles as transportation and to ultimately reduce environmental pollution in the city of Lima. However, due to poor design and planning, poorly located bicycle lanes have been generated, which are rarely used and require the elimination of vehicle lanes. This can significantly increase traffic time on the stretches in question and increases the amount of emissions due to vehicular congestion. The present study, using a simulation model with Arena software, based on data collected over a defined period of time, has determined that the time spent on a stretch of a major road in the city of Lima has increased by 30.7% compared to the time without a bicycle lane. This, in addition to generating a problem among drivers, generates higher pollutant emissions, thus failing to comply with the objective of the bicycle lane.
