AN APPROACH TO THE PERUVIAN LITERARY FIELD FROM THE MAGAZINE ACTUALIDADES (1903-1908)

Estrada R.V. · Metafora (2026) · DOI: 10.36286/mrlad.v3i6.277

Resumen

In this article we carry out an analysis of the perceptions of a group of collaborators of the Lima magazine Actualidades (1903-1908) regarding the impact of the press on the constitution of the Peruvian literary field. Based on the analysis of this textual corpus, we seek to identify, both at the level of explicit cultural agendas (essays, editorial pronouncements, for example) and at the level of literary figurations (chronicles and stories), various positions with respect to artist models, the rules of cultural legitimacy and the expectations about the reading public in a scenario increasingly crossed by the logic of the editorial market of the press at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. As will be seen in this article, these positions are impregnated by ambiguities that oscillate between enthusiasm for the impact of the press in the formation of new forms of cultural legitimacy (new audiences) and suspicion regarding a process of democratization and desacralization of literary practice. Additionally, this article seeks to highlight the importance of the study of periodical publications from the beginning of the Twentieth Century for a better understanding of the various efforts to build an autonomous literary field in Peru.
