An Analytical Model for Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) in Fiber Optics: A First Approach

Larco A.B.; Medina M.A.Y. · 2023 IEEE Colombian Conference on Communications and Computing, COLCOM 2023 - Proceedings (2023) · DOI: 10.1109/colcom59909.2023.10334066

Resumen

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is a recently used technology that uses fiber optic to detect acoustic waves (vibrations) and its frequency. Fiber optics sensors provide mainly a lower attenuation and a resistance against electromagnetic interference. Particularly, DAS can detect vibrations at large distances and it has an adaptative resolution. The goal of this paper is to construct an analytical model and simulate the fundamentals of DAS. To this purpose, a source laser of 0.4 fm of linewidth and a 10 ns pulse width was used to detect a pressure wave of 6.3 Pa over a fiber length of 1km with a noise equivalent power of 1.3 n W at the receiver. The simulation was made using MATLAB and was able to detect vibration frequencies up to 37.8 kHz with a spatial resolution of 1 m.
