Agrarian reform in Bolivia: progress, limitations and pending tasks

Fuentes J.D.D.F.; Alarcón-Novoa J. · Mundo Agrario (2026) · DOI: 10.24215/15155994e317

Resumen

This article aims to expose and analyze the different stages that the Agrarian Reform in Bolivia has undergone, using a methodology with a descriptive and analytical approach to the evidence that occurred in three different stages of the reform process. The first reform, in 1953, restored violated rights to peasants and indigenous people and, over time, generated smallholdings but reconcentrated land in the eastern part of the country. The second agrarian reform, in 1996, emphasized the regularization of land ownership rights but ultimately had only formal value and few results. The third reform, initiated in 2006 and currently underway, is considered to have advanced in democratizing access to land with a more equitable and inclusive tenure structure. Major challenge for the future is to promote the sustainable use of land and environmental treatment, among others.
