Aesthetic and epistemological issues of art-based research

Resumen

This article deals with scientific research and artistic creation and discusses some of its theoretical inconsistencies, paying particular attention to complexity and information technologies. To do this, the literature was reviewed, and then the results of research projects, software development and artistic practice were incorporated. The thesis proposes that art, without jeopardizing its identity, should accept the challenges of scientific methods, update its processes and forget the romantic legacy still alive in its practices and institutions. As proven by the artistic and technological outcomes, this can be accomplished by following Lakatos’ scientific methodology, properly selecting interdisciplinary assets, and recovering formal values and the mediatic, aesthetic and epistemological dimensions of software.
