Resumen
The keeping of pet birds has been increasing in recent years, and these birds can carry pathogenic bacteria and pose a risk of transmission to humans. This study aimed to determine the frequency of Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. and the antibiotic susceptibility profile of isolates from pet birds treated at a veterinary clinic specializing in exotic animals and in breeding facilities in Lima, Peru. In total, 126 faecal samples were collected from birds. For the microbiological isolation of Campylobacter spp., Columbia agar supplemented with 10% defibrinated equine blood was used, and for Salmonella spp., XLD agar was used. No bacteria compatible with Salmonella spp. or Campylobacter spp. were isolated from the birds evaluated. Most of the sampled birds were Psittaciformes, followed by Columbiformes, Passeriformes, Galliformes, and Accipitriformes. The pet birds evaluated would not represent a significant reservoir or an active source of contagion of salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis.
