ABP proposal to consolidate proportionality in engineering education: Experience in the construction of access ramps

Wladimir Flores Manghiert R.; Félix Rojas Huamán C.; Lizet Torres Rivera J.; Vigo Ingar K.; de Tomas C.J.V. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2026) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2026.1.1.2469

Resumen

The difficulty in learning mathematics is a widely discussed topic and the subject of various studies. This issue, present at all educational levels, also affects university life. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to propose a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) activity that allows students not only to apply their prior knowledge in solving a challenging situation but also to find it highly motivating. The participants were first-year students from a private university in Lima, Peru, enrolled in a Mathematics for Engineering leveling course. As a result, the students were able to infer and apply basic mathematical concepts, such as proportion and the Pythagorean theorem. In addition, all student groups designed a technically viable proposal based on national regulations. Finally, a transition from an arithmetic handling of percentages to proportional reasoning concerning the variation between quantities (height vs. length) was observed. Furthermore, the students became aware of the need for spaces for people with reduced mobility.
