A novel redox-based colorimetric method for the selective detection of Fe (II)

Rabanal-Sanchez J. · Journal of the Indian Chemical Society (2026) · DOI: 10.1016/j.jics.2026.102552

Resumen

A rapid and straightforward colorimetric method for Fe(II) detection was developed based on the reduction of resazurin to resorufin in a neutral aqueous medium (pH 7). The reaction was confirmed by a hypsochromic shift in the absorption spectrum, characterized by decreased absorbance at 600 nm and increased absorbance at 570 nm. Two resazurin concentrations (0.0476 and 0.0374 g. L−1) were evaluated, with the latter providing the best statistical fit (adjusted R2 = 0.91). The method exhibited a detection range from 5.09 to 13007.81 nmol. L−1, demonstrating superior sensitivity compared to conventional colorimetric assays for Fe(II) quantification.
