Resumen
In smart environments, depending on the type of service, Internet of Things (IoT) applications will need to know their geolocation in order to operate. Currently, the most widely used geolocation systems are the Global navigation satellite systems, such as Global Positioning System (GPS). However, these cannot be efficiently implemented in IoT systems due to high implementation costs and high power consumption. On the other hand, network-based localization methods have been studied in the literature, one of them is the Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA), which calculates the position using measurements of signal propagation times. In this work, a hybrid algorithm is proposed to improve the precision of the TDoA method, the proposed algorithm is based on the combination of the Chan and the Taylor series linearization algorithms. To obtain propagation times, a simulation tool based on the COST259 channel model was implemented. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated in four scenarios: typical urban, dense urban, rugged terrain, and rural area. The results show that the proposed algorithm is on average 33.4% more accurate compared to the Chan algorithm.
